Staff Achievements

  • Congratulations to the District's Food Service Department for receiving a $18,583 grant from the Department of Public Instruction for a double-stack oven and a walk-in cooler for the kitchen at Fort Howard Elementary School.
  • Congratulations to our District's Head Start program for being the recipient of the "Children's Healthy Vision Award" from Prevent Blindness Wisconsin, which recognizes a Children’s Program partner who makes children’s vision health a reality.
  • Congratulations to Bonnie Baranczyk and Terri Zahorik for receiving certification from the National Board of Certification for School Nurses (NBCSN). Certification represents a national standard of preparation, knowledge, and practice. To assist with this recognition, the NBCSN provides the opportunity for school nurses to set the standards for their specialty area through voluntary professional certification.
  • Elementary Music Specialist Christina Clark from Langlade Elementary School and Danz Elementary School was featured in the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) Member Spotlight. Click here to learn about Christina.
  • Congratulations to Margarette Allen, reading specialist/teacher, and Emily Markovitz, teacher, from Preble High School for receiving a $300 gift card each through Rasmussen College's CARES award. Margarette will use the funds to purchase books that will diversify her classroom library to include more books for students of color, especially titles that show empowerment and success.
  • Congratulations to Webster Elementary School teacher Ryan Long for being named one of EatStreet's Featured Teacher Spotlight Winners after being nominated by a parent for going above and beyond in the classroom.
  • Congratulations to our District's Bilingual Family Engagement Coordinator Luis Franco for being named to the 2020 Sí Se Puede list, which recognizes the 39 most influential Latino leaders in Wisconsin. 
  • Congratulations to District Nurse Bonnie Baranczyk for being the newest School Nurse representative on the Wisconsin Oral Health Coalition steering committee. Bonnie is looking forward to making a greater impact on the oral health of our students!
  • Congratulations to Preble High School teacher Adam Wiskerchen for being named the American Psychological Association Teachers of Psychology in Secondary Schools' Teacher of the Month for October!
  • Congratulations to Director of Communications and Public Relations Lori Blakeslee for receiving the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Communicator of the Year Award. Lori was recognized for her contributions and accomplishments in the communications and public relations field, especially during this challenging school year, at the virtual awards ceremony. Thank you for everything you do for our District, Lori!
  • Congratulations to Preble High School Associate Principal/Director of Athletics & Activities Dan Retzki for being recognized by the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association for 20 years of service! Dan has been an athletic director for 21 years and in education for 27 years.
  • Congratulations to Family Engagement Coordinator Ingrid Parker-Hill for being named one of Wisconsin’s 51 Most Influential Black Leaders. We recognize the important role Ingrid has in supporting our students and families, especially during this difficult time.

  • Congratulations to District Safety and Security Coordinator Chris Collar for being named the Wisconsin School Safety Coordinators Association (WSSCA) 2021 School Safety Coordinator of the Year. The award is presented annually to a WSSCA member committed to vision, leadership and excellence in the field of school safety in the State of Wisconsin and includes a $1,000 award to use toward their school district’s safety program.
  • Congratulations to Southwest High School Principal Rod Bohm for being named a 2021 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Principal Leader and receiving a $6,000 award, as well as a matching award for his school. Leadership Award recipients are school principals who are being recognized for setting high standards for instruction, achievement and character, and creating a climate to best serve students, families, staff and community.
  • Congratulations to Community Schools Resource Coordinator Diana Delbecchi for receiving the 2021 Young Professional of the Year award presented during the 2021 Future 15 & Young Professional Awards virtual ceremony.
  • West High School received an Award of Excellence in the Video Category from the 2020 Wisconsin School Public Relations Association (WSPRA) Spectrum Awards. The award was given for West's weekly announcement videos. Congratulations!
  • Congrats to Preble High School Counselor Al Pannier for receiving the Navy's Impact Influencer Award. This award recognizes his recruiting efforts as a school counselor. 
  • Congratulations to Southwest High School Counselor Steve Kranitz for receiving the Impact Influencer Award from Matthew Roy, Commander, US Navy Commanding Officer. He received this award to recognize the leadership, mentorship and guidance he provides his students.
  • During the Center Stage Musical Theater Awards, Ms. Sara Holub, Preble High School's Director of Choral Activities and Musical Director, was posthumously awarded the Outstanding Educator Achievement award for her work building and promoting the arts through musical theater at Preble High School.
  • Congrats to Bay Link Manufacturing for receiving a $10,000 grant from the Gene HAAS Foundation. The funds will be used for student scholarships. 
  • Congrats to the Edison Middle School Family and Consumer Science Department for being chosen to receive the King Arthur Flour "Bake for Good" grant. All students in the culinary and nutrition classes were given a bread flour kit to take home, and they created everything from bread to garlic knots, dinner rolls, breadsticks and pretzels.
  • Congratulations to Wes Berndt of Preble High School for receiving an $8,000 grant from the Gene HAAS Foundation to be used for student scholarships to NWTC. 
  • Congratulations to Dr. Rosa Minoka-Hill School for receiving a $1,000 award from the Mission: Healthy Kids Healthy Schools Challenge. Minoka-Hill staff proposed a family engagement event set at a community laundromat, supplying laundry services for families in attendance, along with a meal, games and fellowship.
  • At the School Board meeting on July 12, the Wisconsin School Safety Coordinators Association presented District Safety and Security Coordinator Chris Collar with the Coordinator of the Year Award. The monetary award is for GBAPS to spend on safety needs. Congratulations, Chris! 

Student Academic Achievements

  • Congrats to East High School students Alyssa Babik and Natalie Hannemann for receiving their State FFA Degree during the 91st Wisconsin FFA Convention. The Wisconsin State FFA Degree is the highest degree an FFA member can obtain on the state level.
  • Congratulations to Southwest High School students Kendall Hoida and Eliot Algrem for having their documentary “To Be Young, Gifted, and Black: Nina Simone and the Civil Rights Movement” selected for the for the 2020 Digital Documentary Showcase hosted by the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). 
  • Congratulations to Southwest High School for having 38 students who completed 5,793 volunteer hours and qualified for the President's Volunteer Award. Students will receive a letter from the president, a certificate, and a pin according to the number of volunteer hours they accumulated between May 1, 2019 - April 30, 2020.
    Gold (250 hours or more) - 1 freshman, 1 junior, 4 seniors
    Silver (175 - 249 hours) - 4 juniors, 2 seniors
    Bronze (100 - 174 hours) - 2 sophomores, 4 juniors, 20 seniors
  • Congratulations to Preble High School graduate Alexis Simonet for being this year’s Permanent Art Purchase Award winner for her color pencil drawing titled Mac N' Cheese. Her artwork will be framed and displayed in Preble's main office for one year, before joining the rest of the collection in the LMC.
  • Congratulations to Preble High School student Jonathan Meder for being a semifinalist in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
  • Congratulations to Southwest High School students Annabelle Dennis and Alyssa Sparacio for being semifinalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
  • Congratulations to Noah Becker and Xander Neuman from West High School for being semifinalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

  • Congratulations to Carley Duffney from Preble High School for signing a letter of intent with the University of South Dakota for basketball.
  • Congratulations to Colton Van Gheem from Southwest High School for earning 1st Place in Wisconsin by competing in the DECA Virtual Business Challenge for Entrepreneurship! He had the challenge to spot opportunities, conduct market research, make the plunge and open his business in a virtual competition. Colton was challenged to earn as high of a net worth as possible while running the simulation.
  • Congrats to Preble High School's DECA chapter for winning Wisconsin DECA's Best CANstruction and an honorable mention for their Trick-or-Can 2020 event. Preble collected a total of 412 cans of food!
  • Congratulations to the Southwest High School DECA chapter for earning the Thrive Achievement international award! Each year the Southwest DECA Officer Team coordinates marketing class, school, and community engagement activities to support marketing, management, and entrepreneurship. Earning the award, especially this year, was a true accomplishment! Congrats to the Southwest DECA officer team and DECA chapter members.
  • We would like to give a shout out to the six Preble High School FFA members who learned the basics of Robert's Rules of Order by participating in a Wisconsin FFA Association virtual Parliamentary Procedure Workshop. Participants include: Madison Gilson, Bryn Johnson, Thijs Laux, Akrama Mohamed, Allison Linsmeier and Alexis Rabas. Also special thanks to the Wisconsin State FFA Officers who hosted this event.
  • Congratulations to all members of the Preble High School DECA team for earning 1st through 4th place at the Wisconsin DECA District 4 Awards ceremony. Additionally, students who completed their Major Project will compete at the State DECA. Congrats also to the following students who received the high score wild card spots: 1. Nora Barr; 2. Reagen Saharsky; 3. Sydnee Helgeson; and 4. Connor Shaw.
  • Congratulations to the Southwest High School DECA Competition team, who competed with an online marketing test and virtual presentations in the beginning of January. The following students have qualified for the DECA State Competition team in March: Owen Klein, Allison Roever, Grace Zhang, Lauren LePine, Hannah Warner, Trinity Theno, Kelley Zhang, Nathan Lesperance, Lizzy Morris, Ellen Zhang, Adycen Engels, Alex Siudzinski, Natasha Nau, Addie Pytleski, and Taylor Deines. The following students were winners at this year's competition and were recognized at the Wisconsin DECA District 4 Awards ceremony.

  • Congratulations to Sadie Willemon and Argina Blackowl, Art Club students from Southwest High School, for each winning a $500 scholarship for their video submission in Humanity Rising's Get to Know Me Challenge.
  • Congratulations to the East High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America for competing virtually at the FBLA Regional Leadership Conference in Seymour, Wisconsin. They qualified nine students for state competition this April and finished 7th overall out of more than 25 schools competing in Region 3. In addition to the students listed below, Yomna Elsayed also earned honorable mention recognition for her 6th place finish in the Business Law event. Finishing in the top 3 for their event and qualifying for state competition are:

  • Congratulations to the West High School Future Business Leaders of America group for competing virtually at the FBLA Regional Leadership Conference in Seymour, Wisconsin. Congratulations especially to the following students who qualified for the state competition this April by finishing in the top 3 for their event: Savannah Potthier (3rd Place in Accounting II) and Noah Becker (2nd Place in Economics).
  • Congrats to Emma Gorder from Preble High School for being named a 2020-2021 Good Citizen Award recipient by the Jean Nicolet Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
  • Congratulations to East High School student Raquel Quevedo Vasquez for being named a 2021 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Student Initiative Scholars and receiving a $10,000 scholarship. Initiative Scholarship recipients, chosen by their schools, have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond, but have not yet received other academic-based scholarships.
  • Congratulations to Preble High School Culinary Arts students Tazia Reese and Ian DeLair for receiving special recognition in the Fox Valley Technical College Virtual High School Appetizer Competition. Tazia took 1st Place and received a $300 scholarship. Ian received Honorable Mention and received a $100 scholarship.
  • Congratulations to Preble High School's DECA team for being selected as the Wisconsin DECA February Chapter of the Month for their amazing community service.
  • Congratulations to East High School's Academic Decathlon team for taking 2nd Place in the State Academic Decathlon Division 1. This is the highest East has ever finished at the state meet! The team also took the 3rd Place Team Award in the Super Quiz Relay where all team members' scores counted toward the total. The team's competitors are Peter Kiernan, Leah Maitland, Madeline Eckberg, Lydia Munchoff, Maddux Lunde, Ione Berken, Madeline Warpinski, Ashley Ponce, and Ashley Harrison. Team alternates were Larson Parks, Daniel DeBroux, and Tim Austin. Team coaches are Matt VandenHouten and Scott Willems. The following students received individual awards:

  • Congratulations to Preble High School student MacKenzie Loberg for placing 1st in the Name that Food Truck Competition with her "Poppin Pierogies" concept as part of the ProStart Skills Challenge hosted by the Wisconsin Restaurant Association.
  • Congrats to the following members of Preble High School's DECA club for qualifying for the International DECA virtual event in April: Eleanor Stoa (Double Qualifier), Emily Koepp (Double Qualifier), Miyah Washington, Sumedha Hill, Taylor Lahtela, Josh Helgeson, Leland Bartikofsky, and Ian Hoppe.
  • Congratulations to Southwest High School history teacher Jason Krings and the following students for their performance at the Green Bay National History Day competition. This year's theme was "Communication in History." The team will compete in the virtual State Competition in April. The winners were:
    Alyssa Sparacio, Trinity Theno, and Jonathan Valliere for a documentary on the Navajo Code Talkers
    Olivia Daane and Allison Roever for a website on the Emigrants Handbook used to attract German settlers to Wisconsin
    Arielle Christensen, Presley Kasten, and Desiree Veeser for their documentary on the Green Bay Chapter of the League of Women Voters and their anti-pollution campaigns in the 1950s and 1960s. This group also won the Brown County Historical Society's Local History Award and the Women's History Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution.
  • Congratulations to the entire Preble High School Forensics team for advancing to the Wisconsin State Forensics Festival in April.
  • Congratulations to Eleanor Stoa, senior at Preble High School, for receiving the DECA Emerging Leader Award, a prestigious award for DECA students that excel in leadership potential. She is the first student at Preble that has received this award!
  • Congrats to Preble High School's Emma Gorder for received the Daughter's of the American Revolution award for having demonstrated dependability, service, leadership and perseverance.
  • Congratulations to the following Southwest High School students for their acceptance into the Wisconsin School Music Honor Performing Groups: Anna George - Honors Treble Choir; Grace Zhang - Honors Orchestra; and Ellen Zhang - Honors Orchestra.
  • Congratulations to more than 30 students who participated in Doty Elementary School's virtual LEGO club and made an original LEGO creation in March. Nine winners of the LEGO contest will have their work displayed at the Neville Public Museum until May 30!
  • Congratulations to the East High School Show Choir “Rhapsody in Red” for receiving a Silver Rating in the Worldstrides National Virtual Music Festival.
  • Congratulations to the following members of the Southwest High School DECA team for an amazing performance at the State Competition. The team also earned the Gold Chapter Award for leadership development, community service, and chapter development.

  • Congrats to the following members of East High School's FBLA team for qualifying for the FBLA Nationals this summer.   • Congratulations to John Dewey Academy of Learning senior Myles Chung for being awarded an Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) scholarship at UW-Stout.
  • Congrats to each of the participants from Preble High School's FBLA for their awards at the State FBLA competition. Preble FBLA will be competing at Nationals virtually in July.

  • Congratulations to Southwest High School student Vince VanMieghem for being this year's Sustainable Building Design Tech Challenge winner and receiving a $1,000 scholarship to NWTC. Vince had two and one-half hours to learn how to use a building design program called Energy 3D, design a "net zero" home within that program, and present his design to a panel of judges. Including Vince's win, Southwest has had a winner in this challenge for five straight years!
  • Congrats to Savannah Potthier from West High School for placing 9th in Accounting II in the FBLA State competition.
  • Congratulations to East High School student Addison Grant for being awarded one of ten $1,000 Edvest gift certificates in the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) and the Wisconsin Coalition on Student Debt's Wisconsin Money Smart Essay Contest. Winners of the contest received special recognition from Governor Tony Evers, Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes, essay contest sponsors, and Coalition members.
  • Congrats to Alex Jolly from Preble High School for receiving NWTC's Outstanding Student Award in the Automotive Maintenance Technician - City Stadium program. Alex was recognized during a virtual celebration on April 16.
  • Congratulations to the Preble High School Forensics team for their achievements at the Wisconsin State Forensics festival. Ashlee DeGrave and Nora Oleniczak earned Gold medals; Alexis Peterson, Allison Linsmeier, Kova Bronander, Samantha Hoefs, and Yakatahawine Zacarias Skenadore earned Silver medals; and Diana Bonilla, Sophia Young, and Emma Dornbush earned Bronze medals.
  • Congratulations to Preble High School senior Bryn Johnson who recently took 7th place out of 290 participants in the Wisconsin FFA Veterinary Science Career Development Competition. The competition was administered by Fox Valley Technical College Veterinary Science program. Bryn will be majoring in animal science in the fall of 2021 in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

  • Congratulations to students from Webster Elementary School who will be participating in the America Sings 2021 Virtual Concert and Community Service Project. The students will perform virtually with other students and schools from around the country on April 29!
  • Congrats to East High School senior William Sampson for receiving the "Friend of Indian Education" award from the Wisconsin Indian Education Association. He is the youngest recipient of this award! He has written for East regarding Act 31, Indigenous People, Pow-wows, and Mascots. He did extensive research and met virtually with District Cultural Resource staff numerous times throughout the school year. Than you, William, for your passion and insight to increase understanding of First Nations People.
  • Congratulations to Robin VandenLangenberg from Preble High School for being one of ten students to receive a $2,500 scholarship from Better Business Bureau® (BBB) Serving Wisconsin as part of its annual statewide BBB Students of Integrity Scholarship program. Recipients of the scholarship program are chosen primarily on their personal essay, which prompts students to discuss an ethical dilemma they have faced and to describe how they dealt with that issue based on their understanding of integrity and ethics.
  • Congrats to the following Preble High School students for qualifying for the State Music Solo/Ensemble: Nora Barr, Taylor VanRoy, Tazia Reese, Emma Rustlie, Sofia Olderman, Lauren Rank, Rose Lemerande, Samantha Hoefs, and Bree Patzke.
  • Lynsey Walinski, of the Southwest High School FFA, did an amazing job participating in three very competitive virtual events at the State FFA Career Development. She placed 39th out of 149 students in the Floriculture contest; 30th of 297 students in the Vet Science contest; and 62nd out of 365 students in the Wildlife/Natural Resource Contest. Congratulations, Lynsey!
  • Congratulations to all District students who participated in this year's Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) Virtual Solo & Ensemble Festival. The festival recently reached a milestone of 16,000+ entries, making it the largest known virtual festival of its kind in the United States. Special congratulations to the following Southwest High School students for being selected to participate in the 2021 High School State Honors Music Project: Ellen Zhang, Grace Zhang, and Anna George.
  • Congratulations to Aldo Leopold Community School's Envirothon team for taking first place overall in the WI Envirothon. Middle school students Ben Buchmann, Violet Korpal, Levi Meister, and Brinley Taylor also took first place in Aquatic Ecology, Soils and Land Use, and Wildlife categories.
  • Congrats to the following East High School students for earning the honor of advancing to the State Virtual Solo Festival: Anna Lersch, Claudia Schwiesow, and Maddux Lunde. Students were required to submit video recordings this year instead of performing in person.
  • Congratulations to East High School students Leah and Emy on their nominations to the Center Stage/Jimmy Awards. Both performed wonderful auditions, and Emy advanced to the finals.
  • Congratulations to Green Bay Area Public School District staff and students for participating in the first-ever GBAPS Virtual Battle of the Books. In order to participate, students had to team up and read 12 Young Adult novels and meet weekly with their school librarian to deepen their knowledge of those books. All of this work culminated in a virtual competition that took place on May 12 and May 19. Winning teams are as follows: 1st Place -  "Cool Girls Read" (Aldo Leopold Community School - Abbygail Janowski, Penelope Treague, Marguerite Ysebaert, Samantha Isabaert). 2nd Place - "#1s 3.0" (Lombardi Middle School - Tryniti Mertes, Andie Troup, Jessica Trevarthen, and Jaisa Vanden Houten). 3rd Place - “Books and Beyond” (Edison Middle School - Tahniah Hollis, Caylin Martin, and Olivia Wiernasz).
  • Congratulations to Emily Gunn of East High School for being nominated for Outstanding Actress as part of the Center Stage High School Musical Theater Program Showcase.  
  • Congratulations to Emily Metcalf of Preble High School for being awarded the Inspiration Through the Arts Scholarship from the Center Stage Musical Theater Awards program. This $1,000 scholarship was awarded to two seniors who throughout their high school career, actively participated in their high school's theater department, and are looking to inspire others through a career in the arts.
  • Congrats to Breeanna Patzke of Preble High School for being featured in the closing performance at the 2021 Center Stage Musical Theater Awards program.  
  • Congratulations to Southwest High School senior Trinity Theno for receiving the DEKALB Agricultural Accomplishment Award. This honor is awarded to one FFA student per chapter who exemplifies scholarship, commitment, work ethic and passion for pursuing a career in agriculture.   • Congrats to the seven City Stadium Automotive students who have completed or will complete the Automotive Maintenance Technician (AMT) Program. These students from East High School & Preble High School have earned college credits to NWTC, and a one-year technical diploma. Together, these students earned more than 200 college credits. East High School: Brandi Babik, Austin Dewberry, Dylan Fields, Darien Malenchini and Gabriel Vasquez. Preble High School: Alex Jolly and Nevaeh Vang. 
  • Congratulations to East High School junior Peter Kiernan and Preble High School junior Samantha Hoefs for earning a perfect score of 36 on their ACT exams. 
  • Congrats to Preble High School students Bryn Johnson and Paige Klysen for having their artwork chosen to be featured on local bus shelters! One shelter is located at 114 Webster/Vanderbraak, and the other at 1964 Mather/Velp.
  • Preble High School student and City Stadium Automotive student Alex Jolly was surprised with a "toolbox" valued at $10,500. The toolbox was presented by his employer, Broadway Automotive. After high school graduation, Alex will continue to work at Broadway while continuing his education at NWTC to earn his technical diploma. In addition to the toolbox, Broadway is providing Alex tuition reimbursement up to $7,500. After Alex completes his technical diploma, he will work with a mentor and master technician at Broadway. 
  • Congrats to Southwest High School students Lauren Nelson and Hunter Nau for receiving scholarships from the Green Bay Education Association in recognition of their academic excellence. 
  • Congratulations to Owen Klein and Allison Roever, marketing students and DECA members at Southwest High School. They competed in the Kwik Trip state-wide marketing competition through Wisconsin Business World and earned an honorable mention award for their Production Campaign. 
  • At the State National History Day Competition in Madison this past April, two Southwest High School student groups received special awards. Arielle Christensen, Presley Kasten, and Desiree Veeser received the Environmental History Award for their documentary on the Green Bay Chapter of the League of Women Voters and their anti pollution campaigns in the latter half of the 20th century. The Ralph and Virginia Kurtzman Prize for Environmental History was awarded to projects relating to the environment through the work of an individual, conservation movements, and preservation of our natural resources. Entries that received this award demonstrated strong research and analysis, used a variety of primary and secondary sources, and looked at the historical significance of the topic, in accordance with NHD criteria. Olivia Daane and Allison Roever received the Wisconsin History Award for their website on the "Emigrants Handbook" and how Wisconsin enticed immigrants in the 19th century. The Wisconsin History Award was presented to students who examine a topic that centers on events and people within the state. Eligible projects needed to choose a group, landmark, event, or any other subject as long as it is significantly and specifically linked to the state of Wisconsin. Entries that received this award demonstrated strong research and analysis, used a variety of primary and secondary sources, and looked at the historical significance of the topic, in accordance with NHD criteria.
  • Congratulations to the East High School qualifiers for FBLA Nationals, who were recognized with Top Honors at 2021 FBLA National Leadership Experience. Aaron Fisk and Jackson Heller received national recognition at the FBLA Awards of Excellence Show including taking 3rd place in their E-Business event. Sydney Bonlander finished in the top 10 in the nation and took 3rd place in her event; Word Processing.
