Public Meeting Notice Posting

In accordance with Wisconsin Stat. § 19.84, notices of each Board of Education meeting must be provided to: (1) the public; (2) any members of the news media who have submitted a written request for notice; and (3) the official newspaper designated pursuant to state statute or, if none exists, a news medium likely to give notice in the area.

The Board of Education may give notice of a meeting to the public by posting the notice in one or more places likely to be seen by the general public.  As a general rule, the Attorney General has advised posting notices at three different locations within the jurisdiction that the governmental body serves.  In accordance with this requirement, notices of Board of Education meetings will be posted in the following locations:

  • Green Bay Area Public School District, District Office Building, 200 South Broadway Street, Green Bay
  • Green Bay City Hall, 100 N. Jefferson Street, Green Bay
  • Brown County Central Library, 551 Pine Street, Green Bay

Should such locations not be open or available, notices may be posted in the following locations:

  • United States Postal Service at 300 Packerland Drive, Green Bay
  • United States Postal Service at the Downtown location, 118 N. Monroe Avenue, Green Bay
  • Festival Foods at 2430 University Avenue, Green Bay
Additionally, a governmental body may determine that multiple notice methods may be utilized to provide public notice of the Board's meetings. As such, meeting notices will be posted on the District's website as a supplement to the postings in three public places. The Board may also determine to provide the public with notice through a paid publication in a local newspaper which at this time is the Green Bay Press Gazette.

The Board is also required to give notice of its meetings to the following:

  • Members of the news media who have submitted a written request for notice; and
  • The officially designated newspaper.
    • For purposes of Board of Education minutes and annual notices the Press Times is the official newspaper.
    • For purposes of Board of Education meeting notices the Green Bay Press Gazette is the official newspaper.
Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the posting of legal notices, please contact the Green Bay Area Public School District Legal Counsel at 920-448-2000.

1. The law requires that a governmental body give notice of its official meetings to an officially designated newspaper and members of the media who have made such a request. However, the media then determines if such notice will be published. The notice is not required to be published upon notification by the governmental body.
