Updates from the Food Service Department

This webpage will be updated regularly for our school community regarding meeting the basic needs of our students through school breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Grab & Go Meals

Direct Certification
A letter telling the household of automatic free or reduced status will be sent to some households receiving State of Wisconsin Benefits. If you did not receive a letter and are receiving State of Wisconsin benefits, please complete an application. If you received a letter indicating all the students in your household were identified for automatic free or automatic reduced meals, please read the letter completely for instructions on waiving fees.

Free & Reduced Meal Applications
A new application must be filled out for every household each year to receive meal benefits, even during COVID-19. 
We encourage ALL households to complete the application; fee waivers are based on the enrollment in the free or reduced meal program. Applications are mailed to each registered home before school begins. Applications are also available at all open District buildings school buildings and the Food Service Department. Online applications can be submitted through the Parent Portal quickly and conveniently.

Menus & Allergy Information on NutriSlice
NutriSlice is a website and smartphone app used to share the menu plan.
- Preparation & Heating Instructions: can also be found on our NutriSlice webpage, click on Lunch!
 - Students with new allergy: If your student has an anaphylactic food allergy, medical condition or disability that affects their food intake, contact the school nurse. They will contact Food Service for assistance with your student’s needs. All foods served have been analyzed for common food allergens.
 - Students with information on File: If your student has a dietary modification form on file, signed by a licensed medical prescriber, and receives meal substitutions for food allergies or texture modifications, and you would like to participate in school meals and pick up your child's substitute meal, please contact Amy Dose at 391-2407 at least 3 days in advance.

What Makes a Meal?
Well-nourished kids do better in school. To build a balanced meal, students must choose at least ½ cup fruit or vegetable at both breakfast and lunch. School Breakfast, lunch, and dinner include Protein, Grain, Fruit/Vegetable, and Milk. The US Department of Agriculture updates the guidelines for school meals regularly. The GBAPSD Food Service Department follows all guidelines for meals including portion sizes and components, as allowances are made through applicable waivers during COVID-19.

Meal Prices
The US Department of Agriculture rolled out a last minute extension of the universal free meal program through the end of June 2021. The extension allows us to serve free meals to children 1-18 years old only. A la carte, extra milk, and adult meals will not be available at this time of virtual meal pick-up. 

Packaging
We kindly remind you to rinse and recycle your milk cartons! The plastic and foil dishes can also be recycled when rinsed of food particles. Another idea is to reuse the containers for packaging of your own goods and snacks.

Community Eligibility Provision (CEP)

Through the USDA’s CEP program, the Food Service Department is proud to offer this program at 21 schools. Students will receive their first breakfast and first lunch of the day at no cost when the extended summer meals program ends. Households should still complete the Free & Reduced Meals Application. The program is available at the following schools only: Baird, Beaumont, Chappell, Danz, Doty, Eisenhower, Elmore, Fort Howard, Franklin Middle, Head Start Learning Center (both locations), Howe, Jackson, Keller, Kennedy, Lincoln, Minoka-Hill, Nicolet, Sullivan, Tank, Washington Middle, and West High.

School Meal Account Charges & Collections
Access to school meals and other food service items are critical to the success of students. The USDA requires school districts to have a policy in place for school food service account balances. It is an expectation of the District that households plan for their students to have access to food on each school day. Please read School Board Policy Rule 763 in the Student Handbook for more details regarding negative balances. Food Service employees will have envelopes available for families wishing to submit a cash or check payment at meal pick-up/delivery even during the no cost meal service. No change will be available and check is preferred. Online credit card payments are accepted through the Parent Portal.

SchoolMessenger
To help manage the meal account, all households are part of an automated emailing system called SchoolMessenger. It will message you when the student’s account balance falls below $7 or is negative on every weekday evening. Please let your school office know when any contact information changes to ensure the proper number/email contact information is used. When school returns to in-person learning, the SchoolMessenger system will be enabled.

Inclement Weather
When inclement weather forces the delay or closing of schools, the menu is affected. When school closings occur, please view the menu online at www.gbaps.nutrislice.com for changes.

To file a program complaint of discrimination, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, (AD-3027) found online at: http://www.ascr.usda.gov/complaint_filing_cust.html, and at any USDA office, or write a letter addressed to USDA and provide in the letter all of the information requested in the form.
